Breathing may be the most important aspect of meditation. Breath is everything to the body. Breathing brings in the oxygen that the body so desperately needs. Without oxygen, the body will only last a few minutes. Deep breathing is a method to induce relaxation and it also brings about a meditative state. In all spiritual philosophies that teach about life-force energy, breathing and breath work is one of the most important, if not the most important aspect they teach.
Breathing not only brings about a meditative state, it also gives us the ability to bring in large amounts of life-force energy, prana, mana, chi, ki, light-and-love, etc; whatever term is used does not matter. The only thing that matters is that to harness the power of proper breathing accelerates any and all energy work to a level that was previously unattainable.
In some spiritual teachings, they say that before the time of the “fall of man” humans did not breathe with their lungs. Instead they would breathe through their pranic energy tube that runs through the crown down through the root chakra. Before the fall, humanity was at a level of being that was so attuned to the spiritual essence that they did not need anything else but life-force energy to live. After the fall, humanity began breathing with their lungs and essentially severed the direct connection to high states of energy.
This is essentially why, in Astrology, they teach that a baby does not take on its soul and is not truly born until it breathes its first unassisted breath. In the story of Adam and Eve, God “breathed” life into them. Now whether any of this is actually the case does not really matter, the only thing that really matters is the importance of the breath. Even science is beginning to say that there are certain deep breathing exercises that induce weight loss, and bring about a certain degree of natural healing.
Have you ever been in a situation where you became short of breath? What is the first thing that you do to get your breathing back under control, take a deep breath right? In a meditative state, and sometimes when not in meditative state, when deep breaths are taken, it is easy to feel a surge or rush of energy come through the body.
In fact, breathing is so powerful that there are meditations that can bring about so much energy that the body begins to feel on fire, literally. The only difference is that the energy and sensation is coming from within the body and it doesn’t hurt at all, in fact the feeling is equivalent to extreme excitement and bliss all wrapped up into one energetic package. The only way that this much energy can actually hurt someone is if they are not ready for it, but if the spiritual “muscles” are exercised daily, the more energy can be brought about.
Working with the energy body is just like working with the physical body. If we haven’t worked out for a while and we decide to go do a marathon, it is highly probable that we are going to hurt ourselves. It is just the same with energy work. If we haven’t worked with it, there are bound to be blockages and obstructions, and we have to work to clear those out. We also have to strengthen the circuitry. If we tried to bring down large amounts of energy without doing the necessary energy exercise we can, and probably will damage something in the both the physical and energy body.
Breath work is one of the most effective methods to work with energy and our energy bodies. Deep breathing in a meditative state is a starting point. Not by forcing deep breaths, although that works, but by simply intending for deep breaths, and placing attention on the breathing; all the while visualizing or imagining a pillar of light coming down and enveloping your entire body. This is a good method for beginners.

P.S. If you haven’t already done so, I invite you to participate in the
EVOLVE eCourse. The meditation offered in that course integrates a breathing technique with a meditation, and is great for both beginners and advanced practitioners of energy work.
