Can I ask you a question? Good, I’m gonna ask anyway…
You know when people talk about when we fall down on the journey of life we have to get back and in the getting back up we define who we “really” are, well, my question is, have you ever fallen flat on your face so many times that your face starts to kind of hurt?
I was having a discussion with my brother the other day and we were talking about his past, my past, where we came from, where we’re at right now and where we want to go in the future. Recently, he had the great fortune of landing his dream job. Not just a great job, but the actual job he has dreamed of having for at least the past five years, coaching Division 1 NCAA college football at the Univ. of Nebraska at Lincoln.
You may be thinking, yeah, so what, he’s doing what he wants, big deal. Well, considering where he came from, it really is a testament to the human spirit. As we were discussing, we talked about a time that him and I used to live together. During this time we were both at places we really didn’t want be, living on tuna and noodles for weeks on end, working jobs we hated, doing things that led to drunken nights and days.
We talked about all the times we made the choices that led to us either being in jail, flirting with death, or being downright jerks.
Looking back on the situation, we both see exactly how that which we went through has given us the life we both now have, doing exactly what we want to do, living a life that we wouldn’t trade for anything.
As we were discussing this, I brought up the idea that when we fall on our face in life, that it is usually those times that allow us to grow the most. His response to that, “yeah, and my face hurts too.”
As it stands, we’re both still working out issues where we haven fallen in the past. More than that, we’re both still falling.
I’m dealing with past debt, as I’m sure you have dealt with or are dealing with. He’s still dealing with court and legal issues that have to do with his struggle with alcohol.
Personally, I find inspiration from those people who fall flat on their face and have the courage to get back up and keep moving, I believe it’s a great example and expression of the power of the spirit that lives within us; that no matter what situation we get ourselves into, we CAN get ourselves out. No matter what we’ve done in the past, we CAN create ourselves to be whoever we want to be. No matter how overwhelming life may seem to get, we always have the inner greatness that is calling to “get back up.”
Just as when we were all little and we fell all those times when we were learning how to walk. Now, all these years later, we’re still walk the game of life, we’re still falling, AND we are still getting back up.
Let me ask you another question…what is it within you and I that calls us to keep getting up? Why do we continue moving up this journey of life?
Consider that there are many answers to that question, but what is it that calls us to continue beyond that answers we already have about that which we “think” we know? Why are you even reading this right now? What is that you are looking for? Are you even looking for anything?
What’s with all the questions? Well, after having many discussions with many people on the “awakening” path, I have found that most often it is the “unanswerable” questions that allow for the most insight and awareness into why we do continue getting back up when our face DOES hurt from all the times that we HAVE fallen.
Looking back on your life, what are some times that you have seen where you have fallen and gotten back up? Can you see how that experience has allowed you to grow into who you are at this moment? What about those situations of your past that you may still be holding a grudge against? What it is it about that situation that begets the grudge?
Moreover, do you feel as if you’re in a situation right now where you are falling, or are getting back up? Can you see the implications of this playing out in your life already?
Much Love
Michael
